lisa needs braces...dental plan...lisa needs braces

my name's not lisa and i don't need braces. my name's kate and i want them.

mmm, actually i don't want braces.

i really, really, really, really don't want braces.

i want my teeth to miraculously become perfect overnight.

but since that's not going to happen, i oh-so-reluctantly 'want' braces.

i've wanted them for ages but have just never had the guts to take the leap. it's not only an expensive exercise but it's a little tough on my superficial side. see, i kinda don't want to look like this.

when you're in year eight and you have braces, i am sure it sucks. but at least half your friends are in the same boat. and your parents had to fork out the dosh.

it's a little harder to swallow at 29 years old.

but i think i have to do it. hating my smile has hugely negative ramifications. namely, ahhh, not wanting to smile.

not wanting to smile is a terrible way to feel because, in fact, i love smiling for what it represents. happiness, fun, laughter - all those great things.
but, in nine out of 10 photos, i look like this:

{i'm the brunny. the blonde? that's my wonderful, wonderful dre}

that is a calculated effort not to show my teeth. if my teeth are showing in a pic i'm probably drunk - although even then i tend to remember to keep my mouth shut.

it's pretty damn silly. but it's not something i've been able to shake and the fact is, there's a solution.

so, i've got to do it. i guess. do i? eh. i do. i think i do. it's just a matter of biting the bullet i suppose. and saving some cash.

watch this space.

i actually think you look cute in that picture. but whatever, i guess i understand what you're saying. i kinda want braces too, but i prefer to spend my money on more important things like lip gloss and books i never read.

yeh, i guess it's not that i don't like that picture, or how i look when i smile like that - just wish i didn't have to feel like my smile needed to be monitored

I am one of those insane person who actually wants braces for no particular reason.....

Have you looked into invisalign?

adult braces do always crack me up but you're so darn cute you'll make it look good.

@nicky yeh, i got quotes about 18 months ago and it was more than 10grand (actually, closer to 12 from memory) for invisalign and half that for normal braces.

you can also get regular braces on the inside of your teeth which might be a better option. the downside apparently being they're uncomfortable. i think i'd take that over 'metal mouth'

I know a few people who have had braces as adults. They have not regretted doing it just regretted not doing it earlier.

Good Luck on your decision.

I had braces and now my teeth are still wonky.

Rather than having all that metal and stuff like Betty has you can get cover things that make the braces look clear rather than metal. either that or you have clear bands rather than coloured ones (I just loved changing the patterns on mine - my Orthodontist didn't lol - He gave me the choice of 2 or 3 colours each time and I was going to have them lol)

Kate, I am at the moment trying to make the same decision as you. Since I had Mackenzie I have had movement with my teeth and I am aware all of the time. Just like you, not wanting to smile in pics etc. I have my first appointment in June, so I have a bit of time to make up my mind! But I have had appointments book over the past 12 months and have canceled them!!

I vote do it. Short term pain, long term gain. Either that or just smile anyway...

I'd see if you could go with a plate instead - sometimes an easier option - or there are tooth coloured braces now... either way braces or no best of luck - I have massive dental phobia...

Dude! You are a smoking hot bitch regardless! Are you sure the teeth issue hasn't been blown out of proportion by your mind? What do other people honestly think of your chompers? I say, do what you gotta do. I think you're a stunner either way!

ha! karls, you have such a wonderful way with words. i am flattered. you're right, it's mostly in my mind. i mean, they're not perfect teeth but i am pretty sure they don't stand out to others like they do to me. but still, my mind keeps giving me a hard time about it.

@ E. - that is such a good point. i already feel like that. if i had have done it when i wanted to it would be well over by now.

@melissa - i got an email from a friend just before i saw your comment saying the exact same thing. exact. sign? perhaps because i want it to be.

@erin - hi, nice to hear from you. i think we're in teh same boat. want to but a bit tentative. i think maybe the fact it's been on our minds for so long is exactly why the answer is yes.

@han and april - yep, looking into other options and invisalign (spell check) looks great but i think it's about double the price. well, it was when i last got as quote...TWO YEARS AGO!! hopefully they've gone down.

thanks everyone for your comments. they have all been helpful.

xx

I have been contemplating braces too! I really hate the way one front tooth overlaps the other...

Can't wait to hear/see what happens!

Thanks for visiting too! Great to "meet" you!

Until next time,
best wishes,
Natasha.

Take a leap and wear braces if you think it's the only way. I used to wear braces and it wasn't so bad of an experience.

I had braces, too, and I promise it really wasn't that bad. What's more, my teeth are wonderfully straight! I DO agree with the others, though, you look awesome regardless! Good luck with your decision!

Hi! I just wanted to drop by and thank you for visiting and following my blog. I really, really appreciate it! I'm following you back, cheers!!

Hi Kate !

I think you look cute in that photo, but if your teeth really bother you that much - take the leap.

My brother had a 'snaggle' tooth for years and he rarely smile in photo's - he had it fixed this year and I have never seen someone smile so much now !!

My daughter NEVER smiles in photo's - her teeth are perfect but she thinks it makes her face look fat (a la VB)

Your blog is gorgeous !

Hi Kate,

I'm new to your blog and just read your post. And let me tell you as an adult who has braces that it is worth the money!

Had my braces, went with the clear on top and the metal on the bottom, plus I had them on the inside as well (not an option I would recommend if you have a choice). And now I have a beautiful smile that I am proud to show off.

I now have clear retainers on the top and bottom and bonded retainers on the inside. All up $6,000 and totally worth it. I am 32 with 2 kids as well.

The 18 months of suffering has paid off in the end, I have a beautiful even smile and teeth that will now last me into very old age because of the change of alignment no more excessive wear and tear.

Save your money and do it just for yourself, so you can be proud to smile and show your teeth!

I had to wait until I could find a good discount dental like the one at http://www.dentalcall.com, but I recently took the leap myself, and it's not so bad at all.
